What is omega-3?

Omega-3 is a collective term for a group of long-chained polyunsaturated fatty acids, having the first double bound between carbon number 3 and 4 counted from the methyl-end. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential, which means that it cannot be produced in the body, so it have to be a part of the animal’s diet. There are different types of omega-3 fatty acids; shorter chained omega-3 fatty acids from plants and longer chained omega-3 fatty acids from marine sources. The long chained omega-3 fatty acids have the highest bioactive effect especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5 omega-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C 22:6 omega-3), these are also building blocks in the cells. EPA and DHA have multiple effects in the body and the anti-inflammatory effect is well documented.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is a process exerting both positive and negative effects in the body. The acute inflammatory response is generally positive, as it is an important part of the body’s defense against invading bacteria, fungus and virus, and helps the body repair injuries. Symptoms of acute inflammation can include swelling, redness, pain and an increase in temperature in the affected area. However, if acute inflammation fails to resolve the problem, chronic inflammation may develop.

Long-term chronic inflammation may play a critical role in driving most of the animals health problems. The reason is related to the changes in the animals diet over a period of time. The animals diet have never had a higher content of pro-inflammatory components  such as omega-6 form grains and vegetable oils, and as low content of anti-inflammatory components such as omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and polyphenol from olives, as it does today. This unbalance is a driving force for the development of inflammation and health problems.

What is extra virgin olive oil?

Extra virgin olive oil is the naturally oil extracted from fresh olives using a mechanical cold pressing process. The cold pressing preserves all the important antioxidants (polyphenols) in the oil. Polyphenols are strong antioxidants which have a positive effect by decreasing oxidative stress in the body. The polyphenols have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effect. As antioxidants often are lacking from the animals diet it is important to increase the intake. Effektri products contain a combination between fish oil and cold pressed extra virgin olive oil containing polyphenols.

Where does the fish used in Effektri come from?

The fish oils used in Effektri are produced according to a specification that does not require a specific origin of the fish.
Most importantly for the Effektri products are a fatty acid profile with high EPA and DHA content.

Are there saturated fats in the product?

All oil and fats contains saturated fatty acids, as well as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. However, the relative amounts varies from one oil to another. Fish oil is rich in the polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA (omega-3), while extra virgin olive oil is rich in the monounsaturated fatty acid oleic acid (omega-9).

Are there any heavy metals in the Effektri oil?

High quality standards are used to produce the fish and olive oil in the product, meaning that environmental contaminants (heavy metals, PCBs, dioxins etc) are below limit values.

Is there any genetically modified material in the products?

No, there is no genetically modified material in the products.

How can I know if my animal have a high Omega-6/Omega-3 ratio?

As the animals diet is rich in sources containing omega-6 fatty acids and low in sources of omega-3 fatty acids, it is very likely that the animal would benefit in increasing the dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids. It is also possible to take the Effektri Fatty acids test on your animal, you will receive an extensive report after taking the test.

How often should I use the Effektri oil?

It is necessary to use the Effektri oil daily, as instructed on the product label, in order to restore and maintain a normal Omega-6/Omega-3 fatty acid balance.

How should the products be stored?

Unopened products can be stored at room temperature or in refrigerator, opened bottles should be stored dark and dry.

What is the difference between all the other Omega 3 (6, 9) supplements that are already on the market?

Before we can answer this question properly, it is helpful to know that both Omega-3 and Omega-6 are elements that naturally occur in both humans’ and animals’ bodies. If horses have unlimited year-round access to grass, they will keep this balance intact on their own. Raw and concentrated feeds however contain high levels of Omega-6 and (nearly) no Omega-3, as a result of which many horses develop an Omega-3 deficiency.

At Effektri, we have elected not to add no Omega-6 and very little Omega-9 because most horses already get too much of this via their feed. Omega-6 (linoleic acid) can even have a pro-inflammatory effect and this is why it is so important to restore and maintain the balance between Omega-3 and Omega-6.
The difference between our oil and the other Omega-3 (and 6 and 9) oils is quality, and the quantity of Omega-3.

Most Omega 3-6-9 products contain Omega-3 that is plant-based (alpha-linolenic acid), and present in such a small quantity (usually starting at 0.03%) that it actually has very little, if any effect. Both Effektri Equi as Effektri Dog consists of fish oil, supplemented by natural anti-oxidants and vitamin D and E, and is produced according to strict EU quality standards. This makes our product a bit more expensive than most Omega-3 products (fish oil is a very expensive raw material), but then it really does work!

Does it also work with dogs with a dust-mite allergy whose skin is very sensitive to infections as a result?

Effektri has an anti-inflammatory effect, and this also applies to skin. This helps relieve any itch, and helps skin recover. Effektri is however not a medication, it is a nutritional supplement that can help your dog if it suffers from allergies, such as a dust-mite allergy.
